Panel choice matters, but the finished roof depends on the whole assembly: deck condition, underlayment, ventilation, clips, fasteners, trim, transitions, penetrations, snow management, and water movement.
System planning

Metal roof specifications
24 Gauge
In metal roofing, the lower gauge number is the heavier steel. A 24 gauge panel is a premium choice for many standing seam and demanding roof applications where rigidity, oil-canning resistance, wind performance, and long-term service life matter.
26 Gauge
26 gauge is still a strong metal roofing option when the panel profile, roof design, and manufacturer requirements fit the project. It can be a practical balance of performance, appearance, and cost.
28 & 29 Gauge
28 and 29 gauge products are lighter-gauge options. They may have a place on some projects, but they are generally not the same quality level as heavier-gauge standing seam systems and should not be presented as equal.
Kynar PVDF Paint
Kynar-style PVDF finishes are typically considered the premium paint system for architectural metal roofing because of long-term color retention, chalk resistance, fade resistance, and performance in exposed conditions.
SMP Paint
SMP, or silicone-modified polyester, is a common metal roofing finish that can perform well in the right application, but it is generally a different tier than PVDF when long-term color and finish performance are the priority.
System Fit
The best metal roof choice is not only gauge or paint. Panel profile, substrate, roof pitch, clips, fasteners, ventilation, snow management, and trim details all have to match the building.
Appearance and substrate planning
Oil canning is managed before the panels go on the roof.
What Oil Canning Is
Oil canning is visible waviness or distortion in flat metal panels. It does not automatically mean the roof is failing, but it can affect appearance, especially on smooth standing seam panels in certain lighting.
Out-of-Plane Substrates
Metal panels follow the surface below them. Uneven decking, framing irregularities, humps, dips, and transitions can telegraph through the finished roof and make panel distortion more noticeable.
Panel Gauge
Heavier-gauge panels, such as 24 gauge, can help reduce visible waviness compared with lighter 28 or 29 gauge panels. Gauge is not the only factor, but it is part of controlling the finished appearance.
Panel Width
Wider flat panels can make oil canning easier to see. Narrower panels can help limit broad flat areas and may make the roof look cleaner, depending on the profile and project design.
Striations & Ribbing
Striations, pencil ribs, bead ribs, or other panel stiffening features help break up reflected light across the panel face. They do not remove every risk, but they can make oil canning much less apparent.
Expectation Setting
Because metal is reflective and moves with temperature, appearance expectations should be discussed before the job begins. Substrate condition, panel profile, gauge, width, finish, and lighting all affect the final look.
